Saloon showdown Continued from page 1. It is the first national title held at Eastern States since the New Zealand Stock Car Champs were held locally in 2011. It is North’s 11th national title meet, but his first driving a Saloon car. Usually a Super Saloon driver, North says he has stripped and modified his 1999 Corvette over the winter to compete at Eastern States. “We don’t often get to host a New Zealand title in Blenheim so it’s something I wanted to be a part of. “It’s a big deal for the club. It’s a showcase for the track and the facilities and it usually brings in good revenue.” He says he has driven the car in eight or nine meets already this summer.

First arrival for 2015 Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Woodbourne couple Kym Burton and George Thorburn were delighted to learn their newborn son was Marlborough’s first baby for 2015. Yet to be named, Kym and George’s baby boy was delivered by midwife Cathy Middleton on Saturday, January 3 at 7:45am after a 10 hour labour, and weighed in at eight pounds and one ounce. Kym told The Sun she and George had joked they might be in the running for the title, but thought they would be too late. “Baby’s due date was actually January 5, so it was a nice surprise when the midwife told us we were the first. “The whole labour and birth was straight

forward and only 10 hours from start to finish, thank goodness,” she laughs. Now settled back at home, the next big task is deciding on a name. “We had a list but when he was born none of them suited his face. “So we have had to start from scratch. We are just waiting for the right one to come along,” Kym says. Kym and George settled in Blenheim 10 months ago after shifting over from Western Australia. George, originally from Dannevirke, and Kym planned to holiday in Marlborough before deciding to stay. Right: New mum Kym Burton introduces Marlborough’s first baby for 2015.

Luck a big factor in no road deaths By Jacob Page Blenheim top road safety officer Barrie Greenall believes it was more good luck than good management that Marlborough did not end up on the national road fatality list this holiday season. The Marlborough highway patrol team leader says three serious crashes around Marlborough, the worst being a head-on collision near Kaikoura on Christmas Day, could have all led to death. The total number of deaths over the holiday

3

period was 17, the highest in three years. The official holiday period started at 4pm on Christmas Eve and ended Monday at 6am. “People need to realise that just because (Marlborough) doesn’t show up on the fatalities list that it doesn’t mean we are all doing a good job.” Greenall says while there was a lot of attention focussed on the zero tolerance for any one over the 100kph speed limit, police in Marlborough “used their discretion”. “No one was ticketed within 5kph of the

(100kph) limit. “We were just urging patience during what is a very busy time on our roads.” Greenall also said there were a handful of drink-driving offences “which was always disappointing” but he believed the message of needing to pre plan transport and understanding the lower legal limits. In what is a positive for Marlborough, deaths on the province’s roads were at an all-time low since records began in 1980, with two fatalities in 2014.

Blenheim has slipped further away from being called New Zealand’s sunniest spot, falling to third in 2014. Blenheim had 2527.5 hours, 79 hours more than 2013 by still finished third according to Niwa. Top spot went to Whakatane on 2704, followed by New Plymouth on 2633 hours.

Christmas message

New Year gongs

Dear Ed, I took issue with the message on St. Ninian’s Presbyterian church’s billboard last Easter, finding it offensive, whilst clever. I received interesting flak! Conversely, this Christmas I couldn’t agree more with their message ‘Christmas isn’t Christmas without Christ in it’. Writing the prefix ‘Christ’ in a differing colour to the suffix ‘mas’ emphasizes the double meaning well. Out of respect to Xmas’s sacredness to Christians, the religious meaning is why I do not celebrate it. In the case of the message, though, it happens to refer to the Christ who is Jesus. It is, therefore, assumptive, there being, of course, any number of Christs. arvensis

Dear Ed, It was good to see the recognition of locals Liz Evans (Rural Women NZ advocate/life member) and Ted Collins (commercial fisherman) recognised in the New Year honours. Both truly deserved the awards and that’s heightened by the shonky awards to ex-politicians like Tony Ryall and Murray McCully. As a swinging voter I rate both Ryall and McCully lowly in terms of political calibre and performance. Besides they’ve been well paid, plus perks from the taxpayers’ purse. Ryan will have a handsome superannuation, whopping by comparison with the pension of the taxpaying pleb retirees. On the other hand Liz Evans and Ted Collins have unselfishly and voluntarily given admirable service to their respective spheres. Well done! Tony Orman

one on one with the Sun

The Sun

The Reality of Wrestling Blenheim wrestler Adam Taylor has seen his fair share of empty tuna cans, rice sachets and car journeys all in an effort to turn his passion into a career. He talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about the not so glamorous life of a professional wrestler. Professional wrestling is a way of life for 21-year-old Adam Taylor. For seven years, the former Marlborough Boys’ College student who started training on carpet in a backyard in his hometown, has sacrificed plenty, poured money into and taken a gamble on his love of professional wrestling. By his own admission, he is “the nerdy, lanky kid at school” who never grew out of his wrestling obsession. That immersion in the part sport/part art has led him to leave everything he knew behind and move to Auckland to wrestle with New Zealand’s top wrestling promotion Impact Pro Wrestling. “It’s been great so far, I’m learning heaps but it isn’t easy,” Taylor says. Taylor has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from Victoria University in Wellington and one day would like to get into educational psychology but for now it’s his ring psychology that he focuses on. The move to Auckland has meant he now works an overnight shift stacking shelves to make ends meet. “There’s no one around so I just get my headphones and listen to as many wrestling podcasts as possible.” World class wrestlers like “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Chris Jericho and announcers like Jim Ross all have guests on these podcasts and they tell stories of days gone by with other former wrestlers. Working for IPW is a major step up for Taylor, who works under the ring name Taylor Adams. He is currently working as a heel or bad guy for the first time in his career, playing an obnoxious gym rat character whose job

is to be hated by the live crowd. “I’ve really enjoyed being a bad guy. “When I started I was told I’d always be a face (good guy) because I probably always had the baby faced appearance.” If he isn’t working, he’s training for one of IPW’s monthly events. The pay is not flash and the lifestyle is challenging. “Often you’ll do a 12 hour day setting up for the show, having your match during the night and then helping dismantle everything. “After that, you might get some money for food after the show and some petrol money. “Fair to say I’ve seen my fair share of long car rides, couches to sleep on and bland food. “Tuna and rice with oatmeal is pretty much the norm for me – it’s pretty bland but it’s important for the physique.” Two years ago, Taylor was not much more than 75kg but decided he had to try to get to three figures. He ate nothing but protein powders and six bowls of porridge daily for several months before finally reaching the target. He has had one trip to Australia to train and compete and hopes he will do it again soon. For now, he is focusing on making a name for himself in IPW. While he battles regular back, shoulder and knee pain from years of matches, he says the ultimate goal remains the same. “The goal is to work for the WWE one day.” The global leader in professional wrestling is where Taylor knows all of the sacrifice could pay off.

Koru Institute of Training and Education

Taking Enrolments 2015

Enrol to upskill Thinking of study options or upskilling in the New Year? Blenheim-based Koru Institute of Training and Education Ltd (KITE) is taking enrolments as of January 19 for its February and March intakes. What makes KITE unique is its ability to offer free tertiary courses to students wanting to upskill or transition to new work, while also using its charitable status to provide funding and support for countless community groups, chief executive Monique Gemmell says. “The Maori values governing the institute create an effective working dynamic, where students and teachers are treated like family which make continuing education less daunting,” she says.

Last year KITE had over 300 students studying full and part time courses such as computing, business administration, te reo, social services and Treaty of Waitangi training. KITE also unveiled its newly refurbished building on Sutherland Terrace last year, showcasing its three new classrooms, two furbished classrooms, a smaller employment room and a classroom and garage space for its new Cable Logging programme. This was a welcome change for students who attended last year, enjoying all the comforts and amenities at their disposal.

TWICE WEEKLY

Well done! Tony Orman

For more information, contact KITE or call in and see one of the friendly team at 5 Sutherland Terrace, Blenheim.
